Week 4: cog and emotions Flashcards

1
Q

the Affect infusion model AIM’s 3 components

2 different Affects

A

Moods:
Low in intensity, diffuse and enduring.
without salient antecedent cause, little cog content

Emotions:
more intense n short-lived
have definite cause and clear cog content.

Q

Study

The C curve.

A

lack of points on High arousal n neutral valence.

if something is arousing, we tend to find it to be either good or bad, but not neutral in valence.

Q

Study:
Bradley et al. 1992
details

A

P studied images and rated them on the 2D valence and arousal

immediate(15mins) and delayed recall(1 year): better for pic rated high on arousal D
Recog mem performance also sig faster for arousing stimuli

Q

Study:
Bradley et al. 1992
explanation

A

Arousal functions as a kind of elaborative encoding.
Events a. with high arousal r likely to be impt for survival. =>episodic mem network encoding => more elaborate than 1 representing a non-arousing.

Q

Attention and Emotion:
emotional disorders r a. with an anxiety-related attentional bias towards emotionally neg. info.
Task 1:

A

Emotional Stroop task
Ignore words and name meaning, name colour of the word.

identify if the emotion condition vs. neutral condition have dif.

more interference seen in anxious individuals than non-anxious individuals

Attention and Emotion:
Task 2:
McLeod et al 1986
details

A

Dot-probe task
attentional biases in anxious and depressed individuals

1) fixation cross
2) words @ upper and lower half of screen 500 ms (neutral/neg)
2) Detect location of dot (upper/lower) as quick as possible

Measures RT. Look for interference

Variables(3):
Position of neg term/visual prob
n part.

Attention and Emotion:
Task 2:
McLeod et al 1986
results

A

Anxious ppl
dot identified sig faster when presented to the same region as neg ppl -> attention captured and maintained there
(for both restrict awareness and enough time for precessing)

only evident for the latter for ppl with depression
