Week 4 : Attention Disorders Flashcards
What is hemispatial neglect?
lack of awareness of stimuli presented to the side of the brain opposite to the side of the brain with damage
How much has been processed? (hemispatial neglect)
The meaning of the neglected object has been processed
Where do we see the lesions underlying neglect?
right inferior parietal lobe
What is neglect?
Not being able to record everything in the visual field
What is extinction?
Deficit in the ability to focus on all stimuli simultaneously
How can we test extinction?
Using the Posner Cueing Paradigm
What exactly is impaired?
evidence suggests the exogenous has problems
What is ADHD?
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Who is likely to have it?
x3 more boys than girls, x4 more likely is socio-economic deprivation
What are the three subtypes?
Mostly inattentive, mostly hyperactive/impulsive and combination of both
What is the Structural disfunction behind ADHD?
smaller reduced 3-4% cortical and prefrontal cortex volume. reduced grey matter
What is the Functional disfunction behind ADHD?
hypoactivity in the prefrontal cortex
What is the molecular disfunction behind ADHD?
Imbalance in dopamine and noradrenaline and reduced volume, activity and connectivity in brain regions
What is the treatment for ADHD?
Methylphenidate
(me-thyl-phen-i-date) and dextroamphetamine
(dex-tro-amphet-a-mine)
What does methylphenidate and dextroamphetamine do?
Blocks re-uptake of norepinephrine (which is the same as noradrenaline) and dopamine and facilitating their release
