Week 4 Flashcards
What is culture?
No universally accepted definition. Culture is learned through the values, beliefs and traditions passed on from an individual’s family, influenced by class and ethnic groups. Values, attitudes and ideologies which underpin our decisions.
Explain world view
The ideas and beliefs which a group of people holds about it’s world and the people in it. Shaped by our surroundings and interactions with people.
Explain cultural competence
Consciously aware of ways the invisible cultural elements can influence your relationship with others and the workplace environment.
What is a cultural ‘lense’
Viewing things from the perspective of another culture. Or through your own culture.
What is the relationship between the social determinants and health status
The iceberg model and the river model.
Explain the iceberg model
The top section: Represents physical health status that is immediately visible, often measurable
The middle section: Identifies the behavioural and lifestyle factors that contribute to health
The bottom section: Represents the social determinants which have the greatest impact on health status and influence the opportunities, exposures and behaviours that contribute to health. Potential for the biggest gain.
Explain the river model
Downstream, midstream and upstream actions. Illness is represented by the fast flowing water. Busy rescuing victims downstream, have no time to look upstream to see who was pushing them in.
What may be opportunities to make choices in life and change the social determinants?
Help raise awareness and fight for policies to have more opportunities and help with equality and give everyone a chance.
What gender issues are important to A&TSI’s?
Certain customs and practices performed separately by men and woman, especially sexual matters. Clear cut division between men (hunting, male anatomy) and women’s (menstruation, contraception) role’s in society.
