Week 3 (Suspensions) Flashcards
1
Q
Advantages of Oral Liquid Dosage Forms (2)
A
- Can accommodate precise, nonstandard dosing
- Easy to administer
2
Q
Disadvantages of Oral Liquid Dosage Forms
A
- Drug often less stable, shorter beyond-use date
- Difficult to mask unpleasant smells or tastes
- Specific storage conditions (might need refrigeration)
- Specific storage conditions
- Measuring devices, measuring abilities, variability in standard concentrations
3
Q
Properties of Suspensions
A
Fine, uniform-sized particles that are uniformly dispersed in the liquid vehicle and have slow settling of particles
4
Q
How do you improve properties of suspensions?
A
- Decrease particle size/diameter
- Decrease the difference in the density between solid and liquid (increase density of the liquid by using sucrose, glycerin, or sorbitol)
- Increase the viscosity of the suspending liquid (by using a viscosity-inducing agent like acacia and methylcellulose)
5
Q
Suspension Compounding Procedure (7)
A
- Add powder form of drug into a mortar
- Add enough glycerin so that a uniform paste forms
- Add in simple syrup while mixing
- Put this content into a calibrated bottle (using the simple syrup to help transfer everything)
- Add simple syrup to the needed volume (calibrated line)
- Add label and auxillary stickers (shake well and refrigerate)
- Dispense
