Advantages of Capsules (5)

A
  • Can mask unpleasant taste/smell/appearance
  • Uncompressed powders dissolve and absorb more quickly than tablets
  • Variety of administration routes (oral, inhalation, rectal)
  • May be easier to swallow than tablets
  • Can be formulated to delay drug release

A
  • Convert capsule content to grains (15.43 grains/1000 mg)
  • Subtract grains from 7
  • Round to the nearest whole number and that is your capsule size

Capsule Compounding Procedure (7)

A
  1. Take source of drug and weigh it (make sure it is in powder form)
  2. Weigh out total drug weight and place in a glass mortar
  3. Weigh out total excipient weight and geometrically combine with mortar’s content
  4. Transfer content to pill tile
  5. Fill capsules
  6. Polish and place in dispensing vial
  7. Label vial and dispense
