Week 3 - PA Interventions Flashcards
Informational PA approach
Objective:
-provide information about PA benefits
-explain how to overcome the barriers
- increase awareness opportunities
Information expected to influence cognitive determinants of PA:
-self efficacy
- perceived behavioural control
- attitudes
Three main types
- mass media campaigns
- community wide campaigns
- point of decision prompts
4 PA intervention approaches
Informational - Knowledge about PA
Behavioural - Skills for PA behaviour change
Social - Social influences to facilite PA
Environmental - Environment and polices to support PA
Mass media campaign info, pros/cons
-Reach large number of people at less cost then face to face services
- From simple motivational messages to more extensive educational campaigns
Pros:
- not enough on their own
- generally 70% of surveyed people able to recall media messages promoting PA
Cons:
-Cost, just for people to ignore
-Negitive perceptions
Community wide campaign info, pros/cons
Take mass media and “tailor” it to reach a targeted audience
-Same principles apply
Effectiveness:
- Better, because of tailoring
Limitations:
- Relevant only to a specific population
- May not translate to other types of PA
Point of decesion prompts info, pros/cons
Involves placing signs at points where people must choose between two activities
- Remind people they are about to have an opportunity to engage in PA
Effectiveness:
-YES – for simple behaviours, like using. stairs
Limitations:
may not translate to other types of PA
Messages about PA should be…
-emphasizing the pros of exercising and the cons of not
- should have ‘how to’ info
-enhance beliefs about PA and ones control over it
Behavioural approaches
Objective:
-teach people behavioural skills to help them start and maintain a PA program
-tailored specifically to an person
skills involve the following:
-Recognize cues and opportunities for PA
- Develop strategies to maintain consistency and prevent relapse
effectiveness:
-most effective intervention
- effective in men and women
limitations:
-cost, needs expertise
-specific to population
Goal setting - Example of behavioural
SMART
Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Realistic
Relevant
Timely
Together
Can also use action plans or 7 day activity logs
Social approach
Objective
* Structure social environment to help support PA
Interventionists should:
* Provide exercisers with social support
Exercisers should:
* Know why they need support
* Be specific in support they are requesting
Effectiveness:
* Yes, but often multiple strategies used. May depend on population
Limitations: contingent on cooperation of group members
5 A’s of social approach
Assess - ask about PA levels and motivation
Advise - provide info and specific advice bases on needs
Agree - talk in spirit of partnership
Assist - use multiple techniques to increase persons motivation and self efficacy
Arrange - plan follow up and other ways of support
Environmental and Policy approaches
Objective
* Change the physical and organization structures that facilitate or impede physical activity in an entire population
Examples:
* Transportation
* Modify school-based PE
* Access to facilities
Effectiveness:
* Yes – long-lasting effect, addresses policy-level barriers to PA engagement
Limitations:
- challenging, costly, time consuming
RE-AIM
Reach - target population
Effectiveness - pros/cons
Adoption - settings that adopt particular intervention
Implementation - how intervention is delivered in real world
Maintenance - extent to which sustained over time
Used to check the practicality of intervention in studies of the real world
Role of pragmatic trails
what it is called when you use the RE-AIM acronym
Chapter 15 Reading
PA interventions
-enforcing and educating about PA change
intervention= modifying actions that affect PA base on common human behaviours
use products of research to make best PA intervention by manipulating determinants believed to affect PA behaviour
myths:
- easy to stay/become physically activity
- if you always have a positive attitude about PA you will exercise
- PA level/amount is determined by motivation
