Week 3 - Motivation Flashcards
- Self determination theory
- 3 basic needs
One of the most widely researched and cited theories of motivation
* Motivation as a continuum
⚬ Autonomy
⚬ Competence
⚬ Relatedness
Autonomy, competence, relatedness
-Autonomy
- You are the (actual or perceived) source of your own behaviour
- Acting from personal
interest and values
- Competence
- Experiencing opportunities to express
competence - There does not have to be an actual skill, it is about a felt sense of confidence
-relatedness
- Sense of belonging and connection with others
Continuum of motivation - left to right, more self determined
- amotivation
“The absence of
motivation”
ex: dont want to go to practise at all
External Regulation
“Activities are performed to fulfil an external demand, achieve a
reward, or avoid punishment”
ex: A student studying for a test solely to earn a good grade, rather than out of genuine interest in the subject
Introjected Regulation
Activity is engaged in to
avoid negative emotions”
ex: In the final minutes, they look tense as they try to protect their lead, as they are “playing not to lose” rather than playing to win
Identified Regulation
“Activity is linked to important and valued goals”
ex: A wheelchair basketball player goes to the open gym off to practice free throws because their teammates all agreed to try to improve their shooting average
Integrated Regulation
“Activity is consistent with a
person’s identity”
A retired athlete makes a comeback,
because they feel lost without competitive sport in their life since it’s all they know
-Intrinsic motivation
- “Activity is undertaken because it is enjoyable, interesting, stimulating, or
self-rewarding
ex: student who loves playing the piano and practices every day because they genuinely enjoy the music and want to improve their skills
