Week 3 Lecture: Ionic Compounds Flashcards
What are the two types of compounds?
Ionic compounds and covalent compounds.
What is a compound?
A compound is a pure substance that can be broken down into two or more simpler substances by chemical means.
What are ionic compounds?
They always have a metal and a non metal in their chemical formula. They are made up of ions.
What are covalent compounds?
They only contain non-metals in their chemical formula.
What is an example of a simple compound?
Table salt (sodium chloride) is an ionic compound made up of ions of sodium and chlorine packed together in NaCl crystals. Held by ionic bonds.
What is an ionic bond?
It consists of a cation and an anion.
How does chemical formulae and structures work for ionic compounds?
Follow octet rules.
How do you name ionic compounds?
Name the metal cation first, name the non metal anion.
