Week 2 Lecture: The Formation Of Ions Flashcards
What does K do in the body?
Heart muscle function.
What does Na do in the body?
Regulation and control of body fluid balance.
What does Ca do in the body?
A major component of bones and essential for muscle contraction.
What does Mg do in the body?
For certain enzymes and for nerve control.
What does Cl do in the body?
Gastric juices.
What is an ion?
An ion is an atom that is electrically charged as a result of the loss or gain of electrons.
Why are the noble gases the most unreactive?
They are stable and possess eight valance electrons.
What is the octet rule?
Atoms adjust their valence electrons so the have the same electron configuration as a noble gas.
What do metals form?
Cations.
What do non metals form?
Anions.
What is a cation?
When an atom loses its valence electrons, it has less negative electrons than positive pronouns.
What is an anion?
When an atom gains electrons, it has more negative electrons than positive protons.
