Week 1 Lecture: Elements And Atoms Flashcards
What is an atom?
The smallest particle in an element that retains the characteristics of that element.
What are elements made up of?
Atoms.
What is the nucleus of an atom?
Inner dense region. That contains protons and neutrons.
What are subatomic particles?
They are protons, neutrons and electrons.
What charge does the nucleus have?
Positively charged.
Where is the volume of the electrons?
It is occupied by the electrons in the extranuclear region.
What is an atom’s whole charge?
It is neutral.
Why is the charge of an atom neutral?
Number of proton=number of electrons.
What is the charge of an electron?
-1
What is the relatively mass of an electron?
1
What is the actual mass of an electron?
9.109x1028
What are the electrical changes of an atom?
Positive/negative charges repel. Unlike charges attract.
What is the atomic number represented by?
Z
What is the atomic number?
Number of protins in its nucleus.
What is mass number represented by?
A
