- leaders behave in ways that generate admiration and respect, motivate and inspire those around them, encourage others to find new ways of doing things and actively develop the potential of those who work for them.
define transactional leadership
this an exchange between leaders and subordinates in which the leader rewards the followers for specific behaviours.

- Still attempt to transform followers, but refers to follower perception that a leader possesses a divinely inspired gift and is somehow unique and larger than life.
- Followers trust and respect leader, but also worship the leader as a superhuman hero
- A trait that inspires confidence in others to support the ideas and beliefs of the individual who possesses the traits.
- Emergent during periods of crisis

- Having clear goals and visions
- Agents of change
- Sensitive to environmental opportunities
- Develop a self-perpetuating reputation as being charismatic
