Week 3 Lab Flashcards
What are the two main motor pathways in the central nervous system?
pyramidal and extra-pyramidal
What is the pyramidal system used for?
conscious motor control
What is the extra-pyramidal system used for?
involuntary and automatic control such as balance, posture, and muscle tone
The pyramidal system consists of what tracts?
corticospinal, corticobulbar, corticopontine, and corticosteroid-rubro-olivary
What is the corticobulbar tract responsible for?
motor control related to cranial nerves
What are the corticopontine and cortico-rubro-olivary tracts a part of?
feedback circuit between the motor cortex and the cerebellum
Where does the corticospinal pathway begin?
primarily in the precentral gyrus (primary motor cortex)
