Lab 6 Flashcards
Where does the olfactory tract synapse?
Piriform Cortex, Amygdala, and Entorhinal Cortex
Where is the piriform cortex?
portion of the parahippocampal gyrus rostral to the uncus, located in the junction between the temporal and frontal lobes
Does the olfactory system connect to the thalamus?
no, it does have some fibers running through the dorsal medial nucleus though
Where do the olfactory nerve fibers that run through the dorsal medial nucleus of the thalamus connect?
the orbital frontal gyrus
Where do taste receptors attach? (nerves)
facial, glossopharyngeal, vagus
Where do the cranial nerves that provide taste sensation commonly connect?
solitary tract (dorsal aspect of rostral medulla)
Where is the first synapse in the taste pathway?
solitary nucleus
Where does the solitary nucleus project?
central tegmental tract
Where does the central tegmental tract terminate?
ventral posterior medial nucleus of the thalamus
Where do neurons from the VPM for taste project?
primary gustatory cortex in the insula
medial surface of the frontal operculum
Where does the gustatory cortex project?
orbital frontal gyrus (olfaction and gustation are integrated)
Cochlear neurons have their cell bodies here
in the spiral ganglion of the cochlear division of CN VII
Where do cochlear auditory fibers synapse?
dorsal and ventral cochlear nuclei
