Week 3 - Coronary Artery Disease Flashcards
Types of Coronary Artery Disease
Angina
Myocardial Infarction
Ischemic
insufficient blood flow to meet metabolic demand
Artherosclerosis
Cause of Coronary Artery Disease
‘Hardening’ of arteries due to cholesterol build up
Most common, easiest to avoid
Embolism
Causes of Coronary Artery Disease
Part of a blood clot that has broken off and is going through the blood stream.
Is there a relationship between perio disease and heart disease?
No causal relationship. Can happen at the same time as they have the same risk factors.
3 Types of Angina
- Stable
- Unstable
- Variant
Stable Angina
occurs with exertion, goes away at rest
Controlled with Nitroglycerin
Predictable and consistent
Unstable Angina
Not controlled
Can occur at rest, and in changing pattern
Does NOT respond to nitroglycerin
Variant Angina
Rare, Prinzmetals Angina
Occurs at rest
Due to focal spasm of coronary artery
Symptoms of Angina
Radiating pain in LEFT side of body
Pain/pressure in chest
Indigestion, nausea, fatigue
Angina Scale: Grade I
No limiting of ordinary activity
May occur with strenuous activity
Angina Scale: Grade II
Slight limitation of ordinary activity
May occur when walking more than 2 blocks, climbing stairs rapidly
Angina Scale: Grade III
Marked limitation of ordinary activity
Walking 1-2 blocks, climbing 1 flight of stairs at normal pace
Angina Scale: Grade IV
Unable to participate in any physical activity without discomfort
May be present at rest
Use of local anaesthetic with angina
limit to max of 2 carpules w/ 1:100,000 epinephrine
