<120 / <80 (recheck in 2 years)
Prehypertension
120-139 / 80-89
Stage 1 Hypertension
140 - 159 / 90-99
Stage 2 Hypertension
> 160 / >100
White Coat Syndrome
BP consistently higher when in a medical environment
Primary Hypertension (essential, idiopathic)
No obvious underlying cause, may be due to genetics/lifestyle
90% of all cases
Secondary Hypertension
Result of medical condition, goes away once condition is treated
eg, kidney disease, oral contraceptives, smoking
Gestational Hypertension
Develops at 20 weeks, leaves by 6 weeks pp
No medications, just monitored/bed rest etc
Treatment for Hypertension
Lifestyle changes in 90% of cases
Drugs: Antihypertensives
Types of Anti-Hypertensive drugs
1) Diuretics (decrease blood volume by increasing urination
2) Beta Blockers (decrease cardiac output)
3) ACE Inhibitors (Reduce peripheral resitance)
4) Calcium Channel Blockers (cause vasodilation)
Oral Manifestations of Hypertension
Dry mouth
Taste changes
Lupus like lesions
Possible gingival hyperplasia
