Week 3 CBC, Sputum, Labs Flashcards
Normal range for sodium(Na+)
135-145
Normal range for potassium (K+)
3.5-4.5
Normal range for chloride (cl-)
80-100
Normal range for bicarb (HCO3-)
22-26
Normal range for BUN
7-20
Normal range for creatine
.7-1.3
Normal range for glucose
75-105
What is cation and example of it
Positive charged ions
Na, k, ca (calcium), mg (magnesium)
What are anions and examples of it
Negative charged ions
Cl, HCO3, OH( hydroxide)
Normal range for anion gap
8-16
What are the formulas to calculate anion gap
Na - (cl + hco3) or Na + K - (cl+hco3)
What does a normal anion gap metabolic acidosis mean
It’s a kidney or guy issue. A bicarb is lost and a chloride is gained
What does a high anion gap metabolic acidosis mean
A fixed acid ( like lactate or glucose) is gained and a bicarb is lost. More acidic
When is the best time to obtain a sputum sample
First thing in the morning
What symptoms would prompt an RT to suggest a sputum sample
Symptoms of pneumonia or other respiratory infections. Productive cough ( phlegmy)
What is an acid fast smear and culture obtained for
For patients with tuberculosis symptoms
Detects mycobacterium
What is yellow sputum
Acute infection
What is thick stringy and white sputum
Bronchial asthma
Green sputum
Old secretions. Green and smelly is pseudomonas infection, such as bronchiectasis, lung abscess and cystic fibrosis
What is the normal hemoglobin value for men and women
Men: 14-16%
Women: 12-15%
Normal range for RBC
4-6 million
What is polycythemia
Increased RBC due to chronic lung issues
What is hematocrit and the normal value in men and women
Volume of RBC in 100ml of blood
Men:50%
Women: 40%
What is hemoglobin
Oxygen attaches to hemoglobin and is carried in the blood
