What is BP Management (BPM)?
Systematic process of creating, assessing, and improving business processes
Why is BPM important to organisations?
-every business has/needs and BP
-processes change overtime
What are the 4 stages of BPM?
- create model of current business process
- create system components
- implement new business process
- create policy and procedures to assess process effectiveness on an ongoing basis
What are the 3 varies of BPM?
- functional processes
- cross-functional processes
- inter-organizational processes
What is the functional processes?
activities in a single department or function
What is cross-functional processes?
activities across many business departments
What is inter-organizational processes?
activities that cross organizational boundaries. e.g. SCM, credit card transaction processing
What is the activity of representing business processes?
creating process models
What does BPMN stand for?
Business Process Modelling Notations
What is BPMN?
a standard set of terms and graphical notations for documenting
business processes -> create models
What are the 4 main symbols of BPMN?
- Start/End
- Activity (verb)
- Decision Gateway (contingency)
- Parallel Gateway (something happening at same time)
What is the notation for start/end?
-start is thin-lined circle
-end is thick-lines circle
What is the notation for activity?
a rectangular box
What is the notation for decision gateway?
cross in a diamond (eXclusive)
What is the notation for parallel gateway?
plus sign in a diamond (and)
What is the timer event?
Notation to process only at certain time
What is the notation for timer event?
a clock
What are pool/swim lanes?
Notation that represents organisation and diff departments in or outside of organization
What are the three diff BPMN layouts?
-simple layout
-swim-lane layout
-database interaction layout
What does a decision gateway need on top?
“yes” or “no” question
What does it mean when there are two parallel gateways that join to the same activities?
both activities need to be fulfilled/completed to go to the next step
What does it mean when there is a parallel gateway and a decision gateway attached to the same activities?
you do not have to do both activities, you can complete just one to go to the next step
