Week 3 Flashcards
How does caries progress in the enamel v dentin?
Dentin is softer and will decay faster than enamel
Decay will spread after it reaches
Why is it imporatnt to dry teeth during clinical examination?
It helps differentiate the color differences on teeth surfaces - such as finding incipient caries
Clinical features of incipient caries
Appears as white spots and chalky when dry
Spots disappear when wet
May appear proximally on radiographs
Abrasion
Wear from outside the mouth
Abfraction
Broken enamel and rods from flexing - usually at cervical levels
Attrition
Wear from tooth-tooth contact
Erosion
Wear from chemical compounds
Transillumination
Shine light between teeth to see if there are cracks or caries
What is the difference between Class II and Class III caries
Class II = interproximal on posterior (may change color of enamel at marginal ridge
Class III = interproximal on anterior teeth
