Lesion
A general term to denote a pathogenic or traumatic change in the tissue
Macule
Focal area of color change not elevated or depressed in relation to its surroundings/flat
Papule
Solid, raised lesion less than 5mm in diameter
Nodule
Solid, raised lesion greater than 5 mm in diameter
Erythematous
Red in color
Sessile
Base is the widest part an elevated lesion
Pedunculated
Base of an elevated lesion is narrower than the widest part
Papillary
Exhibiting numerous surface projections
Verruccous
Exhibiting a rough, warty surface
Erosive
Superficial, partial, or total loss of surface epithelium - may arise secondarily from rupture of bulla
Ulcerative
Loss of surface epithelium down to the connective tissue - often appears deressed
Fissure
Narrow, slot-like ulcerative groove
Petechia
Flat, round, pinpoint areas of hemorrhage
3mm or smaller
Purpura
Hemorrhage into the skin, larger than petechia, but less than 1 cm
Ecchymosis
Flat area of hemorrhage larger than 1 cm (bruise)
Vesicle
Fluid filled, elevated, superficial, 5mm or less in diameter
Bulla
fluid filled, elevated, superficial, larger than 5mm in diameter
Pustule
Superficial, circumscribed cavityy filled with pus
Indurated
Hardened
Fluctuant
Wavelike on palpation due to liquid content
Copious
Present in large quantity
Dermatoglyphics
Lines forming pattern on skin
Crenated
Scalloped
Varicose
Abnormally swollen, distended, or dialated
Scale
Flakes of retained surface keratin
Crust
Dried blood, serum, or pustulent exudate on teh skin surface
What do you inspect on an extraoral exam?
1) Inspect the head, observing size and symmetry
2) Inspection of the exposed skin of the head and neck
3) Inspection of the eyes and conjunctival mucosa
4) Inspection and palpation of the TMJ
5) Inspection of the neck
6) Palpation of the lymph nodes
7) Inspection and palpation of the parotid and submandibular glands
8) Inspect the vermillion zone of the lips
What do you inspect on an intraoral examination?
1) Retract, inspect, and palpate the labial mucosa
2) Retract, inspect, and palpate the buccal mucosa
3) Inspect and palate the palate
4) Inspect the oropharynx and tonsils
