Week 3 Flashcards
Lecture 3:
What is cardiorespiratory fitness?
CRF is related to the ability to perform large muscle, dynamic, moderate-to-vigorous intensity exercise for prolonged periods of time
Lecture 3:
What is the gold standard for measuring CRF?
VO2max
Lecture 3:
What is VO2max?
- unit of measure?
Maximum volume of O2 consumed per measure of time
- measured in ml/kg/min (relative - can relate to other norms or people) or L/min (absolute - can’t relate to anyone else due to not/kg)
Lecture 3:
How do you calculate Age-Predicted HRmax for healthy men & women?
HRmax = 207 - (0.7 x age)
*or 208
Lecture 3:
What is a Maximal Exercise Test?
Client exercises to the point of volitional fatigue (cannot keep up anymore)
- go as hard as you can until failure (volitional fatigue)
Lecture 3:
What are Submaximal Exercise Tests?
- client exercises below 85% of your maximum (or predicted max) heart rate (then they dont plateau)
Lecture 3:
What is the decision to use a maximal vs sub-maximal test dependent on?
- reasons for test
- risk level for client
- availability of appropriate equipment & personnel
- appropriateness of working individuals to point of volitional fatigue (how many people actually reach their max)
Lecture 3:
What are some assumptions we make when estimating VO2max?
- Steady state HR (HR plateau in last 2 stages)
- HR & work rate are a linear relationship
- Predicted max HR is accurate
- Mechanical efficiencies same for all
- Not on meds, caffeine, or in high temp
Lecture 3:
What are Field Tests?
- 3 points
- usually involve running, walking, stepping, cycling, or swimming
- usually don’t monitor HR, BP, & ECG during performance
- Require clients to accurately measure post-exercise HR
Lecture 3:
What are some examples of Field Tests?
- 1.5mile walk/run test
- Cooper 12min test
- 6min walk test
- 20-meter shuffle run test (beep test)
Lecture 3:
What are Laboratory Tests?
- treadmills, cycle Ergometers, step testing
- more measurements done (HR, BP, ECG) during performance
Lecture 3:
What are 2 examples of Laboratory Tests?
1.) a strand-rhyming sub-maximal cycle test
2.) Bruce protocol graded exercise test
Lecture 3:
What is the Bruce Protocol Treadmill Test?
Uses 3minute stages where speed is increased every 3mins
- by increasing speed each time, you increase in %
- want participants to reach 6-12mins (if 6mins =0.1 hrs too hard than do modified one)
Lecture 3:
What are the stages of the Bruce Protocol Treadmill Test?
1-3min = 1.7mph (10%)
3-6min = 2.5mph (12%)
6-9min = 3.4mph (14%)
9-12min = 4.2mph (16%)
12-15min = 5.0mph (18%)
15-18min = 5.5mph (20%)
Lecture 3:
What are 3 ways of measuring Cardiorespiratory Function (CRF)/VO2max?
1.) Formulas (LEC 3 slide 13)
2.) Nomograms
3.) Graphing
