Week 3 Flashcards
1
Q
ACh
A
- Excitatory
- voluntary motor control – deficiencies linked to AD
2
Q
Glutamate
A
Primary excitatory neurotransmitter
3
Q
Dopamine
A
- Can be excitatory OR inhibitory depending on the receptors
- Pleasure, motivation
4
Q
GABA
A
Primary inhibitory neurotransmitter
5
Q
NE
A
- Can be excitatory OR inhibitory depending on the receptors present
- Modulates awareness of outside world, esp threats
6
Q
Serotonin
A
- Inhibitory
- Happiness
7
Q
Split-brain procedure
A
- Severing of corpus callosum
- scientists know that 2 hemispheres can work together seamlessly, but only when connected
8
Q
Results of split-brain experiment w two images
A
- Different image presented to each visual field simultaneously (e.g. an X to the right, an O to the left)
- Note: visual pathways cross in the brain (part of L visual field goes to R visual cortex and vice versa)
- Speech is localized in the left brain (Broca’s area and Wernicke’s area) –> if verbally asked what they’d see, they’ll only verbally respond w what they see on the RIGHT side;
