Week 3 Flashcards
What is habituation?
Decrease in the strength of a response to a repeated stimulus, occurring across various species.
E - Repeatedly touching a sea snail’s skin causes it to reflexively contract its gill less and less over time.
How does classical conditioning relate to physical symptoms?
A neutral stimulus paired with an unconditioned stimulus can become a conditioned stimulus (CS) that elicits physical symptoms, such as an allergic reaction or nausea.
What is stimulus discrimination in classical conditioning?
A: The ability to differentiate between stimuli, responding to some but not others, which prevents generalized fear responses from becoming overwhelming.
What is higher-order conditioning?
Higher-order conditioning occurs when a strong CS-CR relationship creates a new CS by pairing it with a neutral stimulus. The new CS typically produces a weaker CR.
