Week 2: Cardiovascular 1 Flashcards
What is the cardiovascular system?
The cardiovascular system works closely with the lungs and supplies oxygenated blood to the entire body.
What is a thrombus?
A thrombus is a blood clot that forms inside a blood vessel.
What is thrombosis?
Thrombosis is the process of forming a thrombus.
What is thrombophlebitis?
Thrombophlebitis is a thrombus associated with vein inflammation.
What causes arterial thrombosis?
Arterial thrombosis leads to ischemia due to blood flow blockage.
What is an embolus?
An embolus is a traveling clot or blockage.
What is thromboembolism?
Thromboembolism is a blood clot that breaks loose and moves through circulation.
What are common types of emboli?
Common types include thromboembolism, air embolism, amniotic fluid embolism, bacterial embolism, fat embolism, and foreign matter embolism.
What is pulmonary thromboembolism?
Pulmonary thromboembolism is a blood clot from veins that blocks lung circulation.
What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins are enlarged, swollen, twisted veins due to faulty valves.
What causes varicose veins?
Weakening of collagen in vein walls and valves leads to blood pooling in veins.
What is arterial hypertension?
Arterial hypertension is a persistent elevation of diastolic blood pressure greater than 90 mmHg.
What is primary hypertension?
Primary hypertension is hypertension with an unknown cause, accounting for 90-95% of cases.
What are the complications of hypertension?
Complications include blood vessel damage, heart damage, brain damage, and kidney damage.
What is an aneurysm?
An aneurysm is a localized ballooning of an artery due to weakened vessel walls.
