Week 2 Academic Integrity & Use of AI (Lecture 2) Flashcards
Per the York Senate Policy, if evidence supports the decisions that a student has a breach of academic integrity, which of the following will definitely be a result of that breach?
A. The student must write an academic integrity assignment explaining why the action was a breach of academic integrity.
B. A permanent record of the incident at the University level.
C. Loss of credit on the assignment.
D. Loss of credit on the assignment, plus an additional grade penalty.
E. Loss of credit in the course. If an “F” is the result, the “F” is permanent.
B. A permanent record of the incident at the University level.
If further incidents are recorded, the repercussions for a breach increase significantly!
Academic honesty requires that persons:
1.do not falsely claim credit for the ideas writing or other intellectual property of others, either by presenting such works as their own or through impersonation
- do not cheat (attempt to gain an improper advantage in an academic evaluation)
- nor attempt or actually alter, suppress, falsify or fabricate any research data or results, official academic record, application or document
- do not aid or abet others to commit an offence of academic dishonesty, including intentional acts to disrupt academic activities.
Academic integrity guidelines are important to:
- Ensure fairness within the academic community
- Develop trust between students and professors
- Promote an accurate evaluation for all students
- Maintain value in the degrees given out by the university
- Have confidence in the professionals you work with
any use of the work of others, whether published, unpublished or posted electronically (e.g., on web sites), attributed or anonymous, must include ___________________
proper acknowledgement.
Proper acknowledgement includes ________
in-text citations
reference list/works
cited
When should you use in-text citations
a direct quote or paraphrase a source in your work, it must be followed by a citation
When there are more than 3 authors, we use ______ in the in- text citation
“et al”
for example: (Smith et al., 2010)
Every in-text citation included in your work must be accompanied by a _____________ at the end of your work (typically on a separate page).
full reference
difference between work cited page and bibliography
A works cited page is different from a bibliography (a works cited page lists sources you cited in assignment whereas a bibliography includes sources cited AND examined)
what is fabrication/falsification
to make-up sources that are not real
There are 2 ways to translate words and/or ideas from other sources into your own work:
Direct quotations
Paraphrasing
When you are paraphrasing, you need to completely re-structure and re-write the information in your own words (changing a few words or the grammar is not enough)
f you commit an act that breaches academic integrity, the charge(s) laid against you will be dependent on the specific act committed, but can often result in (least to worst punishment):
✓ Written reprimand
✓ Lower Assigned Grade on Assignment, Test or Exam
✓ Failure in Course
✓ Permanent Grade of Record (always assessed with failure in course) ✓ Notation on transcript
✓ Suspension or expulsion with transcript notation
✓ Withhold or rescind degree
A permanent record at the University level is included at all levels.
Exams, tests, assignments and course notes are the copyrighted works of the professor assigning them, whether copyright is overtly claimed or not (i.e. whether the © is used or not). Photographing these documents constitutes copying, which is a breach of Canadian copyright law, and the breach is aggravated when copies are shared or uploaded to third party repository sites.
AI is fine to use as a tool for learning.
DO:
- Use it to help you get started with ideas. Ask it for resources, topics, or as questions about a topic that you are interested in.
- Use it when brainstorming, and argue with it. You can use the AI as a sounding board with no judgement whatsoever!
- Ask it to explain things you don’t understand, or summarize complex ideas in simple terms. This can help you process big ideas in ways other course resources might not.
- Use it for proofreading and editing – BUT you can’t trust it not to change your ideas. You have to carefully check, tweak, and make sure the work is still fundamentally yours.
- CITE your AI use in any assessments you submit, and be transparent about how it was used.
