Week 2 Flashcards
Definition: A test in which the test solution and test organisms are placed in the test chamber and kept there for the duration of the test w/o renewal of the test sol’n
Static
Definition: a static test in which the test sol’n is renewed every 24 hours
Static-renewal
A test where the test solution is continuously refreshed during the test
Flow-through
What does REACh stand for?
Regulation on Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals
What is a test called when you find a point where some, but not all, organisms are killed?
Range-finding test.
What is a test called when you are determining the dose-response curve (LC/EC50 and NOEC)?
Definitive Test
What is a test called when is it determined that the substance is “non-toxic”?
Limit Test
What does EEC stand for and what do you do if EEC is in range of toxicity?
EEC = Expected Environmental Concentration
If EEC is in range of toxicity, you must do a DEFINITIVE test
What is the main advantage of flow-through and renewal tests?
They can be ADJUSTED
For testing, what should be the levels of the following factors:
Saturation
pH
Temp
Sat’n: must be above 60%
pH: b/w 6-8
Temp: </= 2-3* change
What are the biggest “don’ts” regarding monitoring tests?
Do not FEED and do not AERATE (only gently to keep DO >60%
How long should a test last for fish? For Daphnia?
Fish: 96h
Daphnia: 48h
For testing, what should the load capacity and age & size be for fish? For Daphnia?
Fish: 0.8g/L max, longest cannot be >2x the shortest
Daphnia: 40 indiv’s/L max;
Why do you always need at least 20 fish or mammals in tests?
B/c in stats 20 = the smallest # where you can observe 5% adverse effect; confidence intervals usually @ 95% w/ 20+ individuals
Approximately how old should fathead minnows be for testing?
28-day post hatch
