Week 2 Flashcards
1. Explain Levelt’s model of speech production 2. Recognise use of Levelt’s model for understanding and modelling communication, language & speech processes. 3. Interpret case information using Levelt’s model: Identify & hypothesise levels of breakdown Identify spared & hypothesise impaired processes Examine & profile strengths & weaknesses. 4. Map case data & clinical observations on to the model
What are the four processing components of Levelt’s model
- Conceptualisation
- Formulation
- Execution
- Speech Comprehension System
Conceptualisation
Message generation.
How could conceptualization break down?
No intention to talk, Being abrupt, Not remembering what they have said- repetition, No logical order – loosing train of thought, Telling joke or being, sarcastic which is, inappropriate for the, situation
Formulator
Grammatical encoding (structure of sentences) Phonological encoding (correct sounds)
How could Formulation break down?
Word finding difficulties, phonological based difficulties, word retrieving difficulties (semantics), grammatical or sentence structure error, morphological error.
Execution
Articulation- cranial nerves & PNS to achieve fine motor control required for speech
How could Articulation break down?
Slurred speech, no voice at all, speech is soft, tongue tied
Speech Comprehension System
Self monitoring speech
How could self-monitoring break down?
Rude of abrupt, speech doesn’t make sense
3 Loci of Self Control
Attend to message, Attend to the speech in the Articulatory Buffer, Attend to overt speech
