Decreases rate of bone breakdown

Osteoporosis and Osteopenia

Indigestion/abdominal pain, bone pain/myalgia, osteonecrosis of the jaw

Metal containing antacids/vitamins, H2RA, PPI (affect absorption)

Precautions: limit to 3-5 years; CI: inability to sit/stand for 30 minutes, abnormalities of the esophagus

PATIENT COUNSELINGS

  • take first thing in the morning before you eat or drink
  • take with water
  • stay sitting and standing upright for 30mins after dose

  • avoid metal containing vitamins for antacids for at least 2 hours
  • do not abruptly stop taking this medication

  • there is an increase risk of blood clots durng the first 4 months of use
  • avoid sitting for long periods of time.

Administration of eye drops

A
  1. wash hands and remove contact lenses
  2. tilt head back
  3. grasp lower lid gently below lashes, pull eyelid away to created a pouch
  4. place dropper over eye by looking directly at it
  5. just prior to applying a SINGLE drop, look up
  6. release eye slowly. close eye gently for 3mins. minimize blinking or squeezing of eyelid.
  7. blot excessive solution around the eye.
