what is the regulated health professionals act?
-in ontario, you must be a member of the regulatory college for their chosen profession, and hold a certificate of registration
-regulated health providers are required by law to deliver competent, ethical, and professional services and are accountable to the public
when was the nursing act established?

what is the nursing act?
-establishes the requirements that must be met for registration as an RH, RPN, or NP in ontario
-promotes health and treatment of health conditions by supportive, preventative, therapeutic, palliative and rehabilitive means in order to maintain optimal function
What is the CNO
-college on nurses of ontario
-the governing body for RNs, RPNs, or NP in ontario
-recognizes ontario nurses have the knowledge and expertise to regulate themselves as individual practitioners and to regulate their profession through the college
how does the CNO fulfill its role?
-establishes requirements for entry to practice
-articulates and promotes practice standards
-administers its quality assurance program
-enforces standards of practice and conduct
-promotes good nursing practice, prevents poor practice, and intervenes in unacceptable practice

what are controlled acts?
- acts which may be harmful to the client
-cannot preform a controlled act unless the person is a member authorized by the regulated health professions act

-the performance of the controlled act has been delegated to a person by a member as described above
what are the controlled acts authorized to nurses?
- performing an ordered procedure below the dermis or mucous membrane
- administering a substance by injection or inhalation
- dispensing a medication
- treating by means of psychotherapy
- putting an instrument, hand, or finger:
-beyond the anal verge
-beyond the external ear canal
-beyond the larynx
-beyond the opening of the urethra
-beyond the labia majora - prescribing a hearing aid for a hearing impaired person
- fitting or dispensing a dental prosthesis, orthodontic, or periodontal appliance or a device used in the mouth to protect teeth from abnormal functioning
- managing labour or conducting the delivery of a baby
- allergy challenge testing of a kind in which a positive result of the test is a significant allergic response

-applying or ordering the application of a prescribed form of energy (amount of charge to paddles)
what are medical directives?
-written protocols with specific criteria that allow nurses with appropriate knowledge, skill, and judgment to perform actions not authorized for nursing
-NPs work under medical directives

the differences between RNs and RPNs relates to complexity, predictability, and risk of negative outcomes for assigned patients
