A Swiss psychiatrist who coined the term “schizophrenia” and refined Kraepelin’s classification system
Eugen Bleuler
A mental disorder characterized by extreme mood swings, including emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression).
Bipolar Disorder
A chronic and severe mental disorder that affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves.
Symptoms include delusions, hallucinations, disorganized thinking, and impaired functioning.
Schizophrenia
A condition that affects the mind, causing a loss of contact with reality. It can include hallucinations and delusions.
Psychosis
A mental health condition that includes symptoms of both schizophrenia and mood disorders (such as bipolar disorder or depression).
Schizoaffective Disorder
A way to describe psychosis based on different aspects or symptoms rather than categorizing it strictly as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.
Dimensions of Psychosis
Symptoms that add abnormal experiences, such as delusions and hallucinations.
Positive Symptoms
Symptoms that involve a loss of normal functions, such as loss of motivation, cognitive difficulties, and self-neglect.
Negative Symptoms
Symptoms related to thought disorder, where speech and thinking are jumbled and difficult to interpret.
Disorganization

Antipsychotics

Continuum of Psychosis
An irrational and persistent feeling that people are ‘out to get you’ or are scheming against you.
Paranoia
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (Text Revision), used primarily in the United States for diagnosing mental disorders. Requires six months of symptoms for a schizophrenia diagnosis.
DSM-5-TR
The International Classification of Diseases, Eleventh Revision, used globally for diagnosing diseases. Requires one month of symptoms for a schizophrenia diagnosis.
