What are the functions of the larynx?
- Respiration
- Phonation
- Protect trachea during swallowing
- Coughing
Describe the epiglottis and its function
- Elastic fibrocartilage which is posteriorly attached to thyroid by thyroepiglotic ligament
- Chnges shape to cover the trachea during swallowing
Describe the innervation to the larynx
-Recurrent laryngeal does all larynx except cricothyroid which is superior laryngeal
What is the supraglottis?
-Inferior surface of epiglottis to vestibular folds (false vocal cords)
Where is the glottis?
-Vocal cords and 1cm inferiorly
Where is the subglottis?
-Below the vocal cords to cricoid cartilage
What moves the vocal cords?
-Artynoid cartilage attached to artynoid muscles
Describe the layers of the vocal cords
- Stratified squamous epithelium
- Reinkes space
- Vocalis ligament
- Vocalis muscle
What muscle abducts the vocal cords?
-Posterior cricoarytenoid
What muscle adducts the vocal cords?
-Lateral cricoarytenoid
Describe the blood supply to the larynx
- Superior and inferior laryngeal from the thyroid arteries
- Superior and inferior laryngeal veins
What type of cancer is a laryngeal cancer most commonly?
-Squamous cell carcinoma
give 3 differential diagnoses for a horse voice
- Laryngeal cancer
- Thyroid disease
- Apical lung cancer
