What happened to Genie Wiley?
Born in 1950s LA was severely neglected and entirely isolated, beaten, and starved. Discovered at 13 and a half years old. When found was severely underdeveloped, could not stand straight or walk properly, was not able to chew food or speak.
What happened to Oxana Malaya?
Suffered severe neglected by alcoholic parents. At 3 years old was locked out of the house and sought out warmth and shelter in dog’s kennel. Largely lived with dogs over the next 5 years. When removed from parents home at 8 years old had forgotten how to walk upright. Limited speech, currently lives in home for mentally ill.
What happened to Daniele?
More modern case of neglect. Found at age 7, physically underdeveloped, no speech or language, no language comprehension, could not eat solid food but could walk. Currently lives in group home in Murfreesboro, still no speech but can communicate with pictures.
Explain the Koluchova Twins (1976, 1991).
Czechoslovakia male monozygotic twins, severe deprivation from 18 months to 7 years of age. Locked in unheated cupboard were beaten and starved. When discovered could barely walk, very basic play and language, several health issues. Experienced no permanent cognitive impairment, speech and language developed normally, were able to catch up to peers in school work.
