What are the modes of persuasion? Why are they used?
Ethos, Pathos and Logos
They are used to convince people and gain-buy in
What is Ethos?
Convincing the audience by means of authority or credibility
Ex: The director of infectious disease telling Canadians to get vaccinated against covid
What is Pathos?
Using emotions to convince people
Example: “Big Mac = $3. Every big mac you buy, 100% of the proceeds will go to flood victims”
What is logos?
Persuading an audience using a properly structured argument with facts and figures
For instance: Moraros et al., (2016) show that implementing Lean leads to negative impacts on the worker
What is an example of ethos pathos and logos using ergonomics
Ethos - use famous researchers, and ergonomists
Pathos - showing people the effects of bad ergonomics (injuries, decrease of quality of life - use emotions to convince people)
Logos - use studies or research from a well-known institution, how they implemented it and what the results were

Early return to work (accommodating)
Continuous Improvement
How can we achieve our goals in the workplace
Everyone must be aligned, and appropriately involved in the ergonomics process
Implementing ergonomics will existing corporate personnel and functions can still reduce costs and delays

At what levels can we see the costs of ergonomics?

What are some individual costs of ergonomics
Medical care costs, lost work times, pain/injuries, loss of self-worth, reduced job security
What is the impact of absenteeism and Presenteeism (diagram)
Abs: get injured at the job and need to take time off
Increased turnover costs, decrease in productivity
Presenteeism: at work with physical pain, discomfort etc - performance drops
If presenteeism continues to drop, results in absenteeism
Do not go back to work at 100%, you slowly work your way back up
