Week 10 - Sensory Receptors Flashcards
Chemoreceptor
Interoperates chemical stimuli - taste and smell. They can also monitor concentration of O2 and CO2
Thermoreceptor
Sensitive to temperature
Photoreceptors
Located in the eye where they respond to light colour and movement
Mechanoreceptor
Responds to physical stimulus such as pressure and vibration many examples found in skin also located in inner ear to detect sound and body balance
Baroreceptor
Detects changes in pressure within the body such as connective tissue walls and the walls of vessels and organs
Nociceptor
Stimulates pain response can operate via a chemoreceptor or mechanoreceptor
General sense
One that is distributed throughout the body has receptor cells in other organs - mechanoreceptor: touch pain temperature
Special sense
Has a specific organ devoted to it such as the eye for visual input or ear for auditory or smell for olfactory
