week 10 sem 2 ANATOMY Flashcards

1
Q

Thoracolumbar fascia layers

A
  • Posterior layer
  • posterior to back muscles
  • attaches to spinous processes of lumbar vertebrae
  • Middle layer
  • posterior to quadratus lumborum
  • attaches to transverse processes of lumbar vertebrae
  • Anterior layer
  • anterior to quadratus lumborum
  • attaches to transverse processes of lumbar vertebrae
  • Lateral to iliocostalis lumborum & quadratus lumborum - 3 layers join together

Q

Thoracolumbar fascia functions

A
  • act as a retinaculum for the back muscles
  • provide attachment for anterior abdominal & limb muscles
  • internal oblique, transverse abdominus, latissimus dorsi, gluteus
    maximus
  • contributes to stabilising lumbar vertebral column
  • contributes to the stability of the sacroiliac joint  aids in transferring load
between spine, pelvis and lower limb

Q

Lumbopelvic stability

A
  • Co-contraction of the anterolateral abdominal
wall muscles stiffens the trunk, important for
trunk stability during high load tasks
  • Changes in intra-abdominal pressure – contraction of TrA, diaphragm and pelvic
floor muscles, increase in spinal stiffness
  • Thoracolumbar fascia – tension here (TrA
contraction) when combined with increased intra-abdominal pressure increases spinal
    stiffness

Q

lumbopelvic Movements in the Coronal Plane

A

Around an A-P axis
* Pelvic lift (tilt)
* Pelvic drop (tilt)
* Corresponding lateral flexion of the
lumbar spine (contralateral flexion
with pelvic drop)
* Corresponding hip abduction with
pelvic drop

Q

lumbopelvic Movements in the Sagittal Plane

A
  • Around a transverse axis
  • Anterior pelvic tilt
  • Posterior pelvic tilt
  • Corresponding increase lumbar
    lordosis with anterior pelvic tilt
  • Corresponding hip flexion with
    anterior pelvic tilt

Q

lumbopelvic Movements in the Horizontal Plane

A
  • Around a vertical axis
  • Rotation to the right
  • Rotation to the left
  • Corresponding contralateral rotation
    of lumbar spine
  • Corresponding contralateral hip
    external rotation
