week 10 lung function in health Flashcards
what do obstructive lung disease effect in the lungs and name 3 examples COPD
- difficulty with exhalation
- increased airway resistence
asthma
emphysema
chronic bronchitis
what do restrictive lung disease effect in the lungs and name 3 examples
- difficulty with exhalation
- impaired lung expansion
- impaired lung tissue
fibrosis
pleaural effesion/pleurisy
Atelectasis
what is pulmonary fibrosis
- resictive disease resulting in reduced lung expansion
- exposure to irritants eg asbestos
what is chronic bronchitis
hypersecretion of mucus and chronic productive cough for at least 3 months
what is emphysema
permanent enlargement of airways in the respiratory region
- has to do with pathophysiology
- break down of elastic fibres =elastic recoil
- reduced elastic recoil = decrease surface tension and elastic fibres
which then struggles with expiration as recoil is working with it(muscle)
what are the symptoms of COPD
- obstruction (mucus constriction/ collapse
- difficultly during expiration
- reduced gas exchange
- ventilation- perfusion mis-match
what is dynamic airway closure
- snap shut when the pressure is low volume (when expiring) to keep residual volume to to stop collapse of airway
what is early small airway closure
when closure occurs before normal quantity of air is expired
what is early small airway closure caused from
- increased resistance to airflow (airway diamter/asthma)
- increased intrapleural pressure (decreased elastic recoil/emphysema)
