What is sex?
biological categories determined by genetics (i.e., sex chromosomes)
What are primary sex characteristics
testes in males, ovaries in females
What are secondary sex characteristics
sexual maturity characteristics that are not associated with reproduction, such as voice quality, facial hair, breast development
What is an intersex person?
people born with characteristics that do not fit the binary notion of male or female bodies
What is gender?
gender is determined by socialization
and the roles that individuals adopt
what is gender expression?
how we demonstrate our gender in our behaviour, mannerisms, and our outward appearance
what is gender identity?
a person’s internal, deeply held sense of their gender
define transgender
people whose gender identity is different from their biological sex
define non-binary
people who do not identify exclusively as male or female and therefore define themselves outside these binary terms
define cisgender
gender identity is the same as biological sex
what are gender role norms?
normative expectations
for males and females that are applied to
individuals’ everyday behaviour
define gender stereotypes
broad generalized judgements of the activities, attitudes, skills, and characteristics deemed appropriate for males or females in each culture
define gender typing
the process where young children acquire the characteristics and attitudes that are considered appropriate for males and females

middle to late childhood

gender identity high in both masculine and feminine characteristics

what is adrenarche?
maturation of the adrenal glands which stimulates puberty hormones

an individual’s sense of self regarding sexuality
what can occur when a family is supportive of an LGBTQ+ youth?
it can buffer the effects of sexual orientation-based victimization, and contribute to greater identity integration
define gender stability
the understanding that gender generally does not change, typically emerges around 3 years of age
define gender constancy
understanding that gender does not change as a result of clothing or activities
gender schema theory
a mental structure that organizes gender related information, such as what it means to be a male or a female
