Define development
The way that we grow, change, and stay the same overtime
What are the three dimensions of development?
physical, cognitive, and socioemotional
What is cognitive development?
maturation of mental processes used it obtain knowledge, think, and problem solve
What is socioemotional development?
maturation of social and emotional functioning (e.g., personality, emotions, personal perceptions, social skills, relationships)
What is physical development?
body maturation, health, sensation, and perception
What are six aspects of development?
lifelong, plastic, multidimensional, multidirectional, multidisciplinary, influenced by multiple contexts,
What are the contexts of development?
normative age-graded influences, normative history-graded influences, and nonnormative influences
What is continuous development?
the idea that we do not notice massive changes in development at any given time, we are always undergoing small changes that add up over time
What is non-continuous development?
the idea that developmental changes occur in big, noticeable moments
How is development an active and passive process?
it is a passive process in that we are influenced by physical and social contexts around us, but an active process in that we are able to interact with and change these contexts
What are the major human developmental perspectives/theories?
psychoanalytic, behaviouralist and social learning, cognitive, sociocultural systems, ethology and evolutionary development
