Week 10 - Cell Death and Research Flashcards
What is Necrosis?
Premature Cell death
What is Apoptosis?
Cell-suicide
What is Autophagy?
Cell self-cannibalism
What is the stable state that our body strives to maintain?
Homeostasis
What happens when your body experiences necrosis?
1 - Redness (Rubor) 2 - Heat (Calor) 3 - Swelling (Tumor) 4 - Pain (Dolor) 5 - Loss of function (functio laesa)
What is the process of necrosis?
1 - Cell swells (blebbing)
2 - Cell lyses
3 - Cell releases cytoplasmic material
What is the process of Apoptosis?
1 - DNA is degraded
2 - Cell and nucleus shrink/fragments
3 - Shrinking continues and cell is engulfed by a macrophage
4 - Macrophage phagocytizes apoptotic cell
Does inflammation occur during apoptosis?
No.
What is pyknosis?
The condensing of the nucleus
What are capses?
Proteins that activate other proteins that destroy the cell
Why do you need apoptosis?
- Removes webbed fingers
- Removes immune system cells that
How does the cell degrade itself during autophagy?
Through the use of lysosomal machinery
What are lysosomes?
Cellular organelles that contain proteins to digest other proteins into amino acids
What is the process of autophagy occurring on an organelle?
1 - Organelle brought into cell via a food vesicle
2 - Lysosome fuses with vesicle releasing enzymes to digest organelle
What was the method used to put dogs into suspended animation?
1 - Remove blood from dogs 2 - Inject low temperature solution 3 - Suspend animation 4 - Put blood back in 5 - Electrical shock to heart
