Week 1 - Neck Flashcards
What are the 4 compartments of the neck?
Vertebral compartment
Vascular compartment
Visceral compartment
Enclosed in outer musculofascial collar
What is the vertebral compartment of the neck?
Cervical vertebrae and postural muscles - pre and postvertebral muscles
What is the vascular compartment of the neck?
One on each side
Contains the major blood vessels and vagus nerve
What is the visceral compartment of the neck?
Contains thyroid, parathyroid glands, pharynx, larynx, trachea, and oesophagus
What are the main parts of a cervical vertebrae?
body, posterior and anterior tubercle, foramen transversum, transverse process, spinous process and vertebral foramen
How many cervical vertebrae are there?
7
What is the joint present between the occipital condyles and C1?
Atlanto-occipital joint
Synovial ellipsoid joint
What type of joint is between C1 and C2 at the odontoid peg?
Atlanto-axial joint
Synovial pivot joint
What structures pass through the foramen transversarium?
Vertebral arteries
What is the vertebral prominens?
C7 - has long and prominant spinous process
What curvature exists in the cervical portion of vertebral column?
Concave posteriorly - lordoses
What are the boundaries of the anterior triangle of the neck?
Superior - inferior border of the mandible
Posterior - anterior border of SCM
Anterior - median line of neck
What are the boundaries of the posterior triangle of the neck?
Superior - posterior margin of SCM
Posterior - anterior margin of trapezius
Inferior - middle 1/3 of clavicle
Where is the SCM attachments?
Superior - mastoid process
Inferior - manubrium of sternum and superior surface of medial 1/3 of clavicle
What would happen if right SCM contracted?
Right side would tilt
Head will turn to left
What is the attachments of the trapezius muscle?
Lateral 1/3 of clavicle
Superior crest of spine of scapula
Medial aspect of scapular space
What cranial nerve innervates the SCM and trapezius muscle?
Spinal accessory nerve
Found in the posterior triangle of the neck
What divides the anterior triangle into 4 triangles?
Omohyoid and digastric muscles
What are the 4 triangles of the anterior triangle of neck?
Submental
Submandibular/ digastric
Carotid
Muscular
What are the boundaries of the submental triangle?
Hyoid bone inferiorly
Midline of neck
Anterior belly of digastric muscle
What are the boundaries of the submandibular triangle?
Inferior body of the mandible
Anterior body of digastric muscle
Posterior belly of digastric muscle
What are the boundaries of the carotid triangle?
Posterior belly of digastric muscle
Medial border of SCM
Superior belly of omohyoid muscle
What are the boundaries of the muscular triangle?
Hyoid bone
Midline of neck
Superior belly of omohyoid muscle and inferior part of SCM
