What is motivation?
Involves those processes that give behaviour its ENERGY & DIRECTION
Energy: Relatively strong, intense, persistent B
Direction: Aimed toward achieving a particular purpose/goal
What are the two key questions regarding motivation behaviour?
- What CAUSES behaviour?
2. Why does behaviour VARY in its INTENSITY?
What are specific questions regarding motivation behaviour?
- What STARTS behaviour?
- How does motivation initiate behaviour? - How is behaviour SUSTAINED over time? (persistence)
- Why is behaviour DIRECTED towards some ends but away from others? (goal-directedness)
- Why does behaviour CHANGE its direction?
- Behaviour is dynamic

What is a need?
Condition essential for person’s survival, well-being, growth
What are the factors affecting the hunger need?
- Short-term appetite regulated by blood glucose
- Long-term energy balance; set point
(biologically determined body weight) - Envmtal influences
> Presence of others/social facilitation
> Large serving size
> Buffet effect (more available options) - Restraint release
What is restraint release?
- Inhibited state when on diet
- Having some high-caloric food will throw off regulation of diet – restraint released, eat more
