Non-achievement: emotional dissatisfaction with others, suspiciousness, difficulty with interpersonal relationships

Non-achievment: Lack of self-confidence, lack of pride in ability to perform, feeling of being controlled by others, caregivers restrict independent behaviors (physically or verbally, or set the child up for unrealistic expectations

Task: Gain self-control and independence; delay of gratification, self-confidence in ability to perform
How is autonomy achieved?
When parents encourage and provide opportunities for independent activities

Goal: Develop sense of purpose and ability to initiate activities
Achievement: ability to exercise restraint and self-control of inappropriate behaviors, control impulses

Non-achievement: feelings of inadequacy, guilt, sense of defeat

Task: Achieve life’s goals established for self while also considering the welfare of future generations
Achievement: sense of gratification from personal and professional achievement from meaningful contributions to others

Active in service to others and society
Generativity vs Stagnation/Self-Absorption: age, non-achievement
30-65 years
Non-achievement: lack of concern for welfare of future, preoccupied with self, withdrawn/isolated and self indulgent
Generativity is unresolved when

Goal: review life and derive meaning from positive and negative events while achieving positive sense of self
