Week 1 Flashcards
What is analysis?
The process of making meaning
What is thematic analysis?
Most commonly used qualitative analysis technique
Used for analysis and reporting patterns in the data (themes)
Describe the process of thematic analysis
Familiarisation with the data - transcribe and re read
Code the data - interesting features highlighted
Search for themes - patterns in the codes
Review the themes - check how the themes fit with data set as a whole
Define and name themes
Write up the report
What is coding?
To ‘pull apart’ data
A code is a label attached to a selection of text which can later be related to a theme
What are the two primary ways that themes can be identified?
Deductive (top down/apriory)
- driven by a specific research question
Inductive (bottom up/emergent)
- themes are linked to the data
What is a theme?
A way of organising and categorising codes (patterns in the codes)
What is negative case analysis?
Concepts which do not fit the pattern
What are thematic maps?
Also known as concept mapping
Assist analysis by organising and representing data (themes/codes)
Why are analytical notes important?
Easy to forget ideas during data collection, notes act as a reminder
Procedural memos - how you did coding
Analytical memos - hunches/ideas etc
