Week 1 Flashcards
Are there more vertebrates or invertebrates?
invertebrates
Science
an approach to understanding the natural world
Natural Selection
Darwin’s proposed mechanism of evolution interacts with mutation which results in adaptation
Evolution
change over time
How many steps of scientific inquiry are there?
5
What are the steps of scientific Inquiry?
make an observation, generate questions, make a hypothesis, design a test for the hypothesis, and generate data that supports/refutes the hypothesis
Inheritance of Acquired Characteristics
Lamarck’s theory of evolution is organisms can pass on traits developed during their lifetime to their offspring, and changes from environmental factors or usage of different body parts can be inherited by the next generation
What led to the concept of natural selection?
Darwin went on a 5-year long journey looking at stuff all over the world and thought that we should domesticate plants
Requirements of Natural Selection (4)
variation in traits, trait variation is inherited, competition, and favorable traits survive better
How does natural selection contribute to biodiversity?
It leads to adaptation, and diversification that can form new species and can be supported empirically
Do individuals evolve?
No, populations evolve, not individuals
How did COVID naturally select from Delta to Omicron?
due to genetic mutation that happens randomly
Universal Adaptation
a biological feature or behavior that is common across a wide variety of species or environments
