What is a webers fractures?
A fracture at the bottom of the fibula and tibia.
Aetiology of Webers fracture or mechanism of injury?
Trauma such as falls, twisting injuries, sporting related injuries
MOI- going over on the ankle, twisting injuries.
Epidemiology of webers fracture.
Usually active, young people and older females due to menopause.
What are the risk factors of Webers fracture.
- Smoking
- Obesity
- Diabetes
- Previous fall and/or fractures
- Very high or low level of physical activity
- Low mineral density
- Comorbidities
- Older women
- 50 years plus
- Mulitple medications
Clinical presentation of Webers fracture.
- Difficulties or even inability to walk or load the ankle
- Pain
- Swelling
- Bruising soon after injury
- Difference in appearance
- Deformity
What are the classifications of Webers fracture?
Type A
Type B
Type C
Factors affecting the healing process?
- Soft tissue injury
- Radiation
- Chemical or thermal burns
- Infection
- Anaemia
- Hypoxia
- Denervation
- Excessive compression
- Age
What are the stages of fracture healing?
- Haemotoma
- Inflammation
- Granulation
- Callus
- Consolidation
- Remodeling
What do physiotherapist do for fracture healing?
- Promote healing
- Encourage weight bearing
- Maintain strength of weakened muscles
- Maintain ROM of affected and surrounding joints.
- Reduce pain
- Reduce swelling
What are the features of a Type A webers/pots fracture?
- Fracture inferior to syndesmosis
- Syndesmosis intact
- Medial malleolus may be fractured
- Usually stable
- Reduction and cast
- ORIF occasionally needed
What are the features of a Type B webers/pots fracture?
- Fraacture at level of syndesmosis
- Syndesmosis intact or torn
- Possible medial fracture or deltoid ligament damage
- Stability variable
- May require ORIF
What are the features of a Type C webers/pots fracture?
- Above level of ankle joint
- Tibiofibular syndesmosis damaged = widening of joint
- Usually medial fracture or deltoid injury
- Unstable
- ORIF required
