Fracture Healing Flashcards
1
Q
Factors affecting the healing process.
A
- Soft tissue injury
- Radiation
- Chemical or thermal burns
- Infection
- Anaemia
- Hypoxia
- Denervation
- Excessive compression
- Age
2
Q
What are the stages of fracture healing? (5)
A
- Haemotoma
- Proliferation
- Callus formation
- Consolidation
- Remodeling
3
Q
What happens at the haemotoma stage?
A
- Tearing of blood vessels
- Local haemorrhage
- Defect between the bone ends filled with clotted blood.
4
Q
What happens at the inflammatory stage?
A
- Acute inflammatory reaction
- Macrophages invade and begin demolition phagocytosis.
- Vascular in growth
5
Q
What happens at the granulation stage?
A
- Vascular in growth
- 5 days granulation replaces the blood clot
- Within the granulation small groups of cartilage cells form a soft bony callus-fracture some stability
6
Q
What happens at the callus stage?
A
- Islands of cartilage
- Fracture ends unite by sleeve of vascular granulation tissue and cartilage.
- Calcuim deposits into cartilage and new bone is formed
7
Q
What happens at the consooidation phase?
A
- Woven bone replaced by lamellar bone
2. Excess bone in the marrow and cavity and subperiosteally.
8
Q
What are some of the types of fractures?
A
- Green stick
- Transverse
- Spiral
- Oblique
- Compression
- Comminuted
- Segmental
9
Q
What do physiotherapist do for fracture healing?
A
- Promote healing
- Encourage weight bearing
- Maintain strength of weakened muscles
- Maintain ROM of affected and surrounding joints.
- Reduce pain
- Reduce swelling
