Weber: Integrative Care Flashcards
What is the BPSS model?
Biopsychosocial Spiritual Model
Idea that ALL problems are at once biological, psychological and social.
Fueled by UNMET needs of pts and families.
Works from a systems model and encourages COLLABORATION between therapist and health professionals.
How are relationships related to health outcomes?
Relationships affect each participant and creates a potential for healing to manifest.
What are barriers to collaboration?
- Disciplinary centrism (one’s own discipline is superior and more relevant)
- Differences between disciplines (different types of information are emphasized for clinical problem solving)
- Lack of effective collaboration (common goals are not identified)
What are keys to successful collaboration?
- Locations of service (where is your mental health provider)
- Business arrangement
- Relationship (rapport)
- Common purpose
- Paradigm (same belief system)
- Communication (open?)
What are the differences between mental and medical health professions?
Language: Medical vs. humanistic
New paradigm: biopsychosocial vs. family systems
Professional style: action/advice giving vs. process oriented/avoids advice
Session time:
15 vs. 45
Demand:
around the clock vs. scheduled session
Medications:
frequent vs infrequent
Use of family hx:
basic vs. extensive
At risk for:
somatic fixation vs psychosocial fixation
What is the 3 world view?
- Clinical (quality of care, pt driven)
- Operational (systems, organization, communication, process improvement)
- Financial (reimbursment, coding, billing)
* People are trained in one discipline (speak diff languages, ask diff questions, seek diff outcomes, employ diff values and principles)
Where do people w/ mental health symptoms seek care?
Pts w/ significant symptoms of depression and anxiety seek treatment solely from their PCP
Research indicates that approximately 30% of primary care visits are for psychosocial issues (depression, anxiety, alcohol abuse, somatoform disorders)
Stigma: Half of people aren’t comfortable seeing a mental health professional.
What are barriers to care for pts w/ mental health sxs?
- Compromised physical health is associated w/ behavioral health problems
- Compromised behavioral health> physical health problems
- Stigma of behavioral health services
- Compartmentalized understanding of health
- Insurance/cost offset/ACA

- What do you think CAUSED the problem?
- How do you COPE with your condition?
- What CONCERNS do you have regarding your problem?
What is integrated care?
The integration of family therapy into behavioral medicine and biomedicine creating an integrated, team-based health care delivery system.
