What is the prefrontal cortex responsible for?
Problem solving–enables us to assess situations and make sound decisions
Keep our emotions/desires under control
*Chemicals can affect this part of the developing brain
How does long term use of drugs affect brain circuits?
Trigger adaptation in habit or non-conscious memory systems
What is conditioning?
environmental cues become associated w/ the use experience and can trigger uncontrollable cravings
This LEARNED reflex is robust and can emerge even after years of abstinence
What are the rewards that drug and alcohol produce?
euphoria
reduced negative feelings

regulates: movements emotion cognition motivation FEELINGS OF PLEASUSRE
(quick onset and lasts longer than natural rewards)
euphoria and teaches the repetition of behavior
What are the lasting effects of drugs on the brain?
- Brain produces less DA and fewer receptors
- ability to experience pleasure is reduced
- Drugs needed in large amts to feel high
- Drugs no longer produce high
