Weber Flashcards
Embedded view
looked at how politics influenced other social structures
thinks all social structures influence one another and is against Marxist materialism
Power View
even more than Marx, investigated forms and bases of power
Stratification- Weber
weber created ideal types of social stratification like Marx
Definition of stratification
hierarchical ranking or layering of social relations
Ideal types of stratification (3)
Class: strat. based on possessing resouces and not positions in relations to power
Party: based on power
Status: culture and ideas
Weber thought you can use these ideal types to analyze
Complemtarity and Contention
weber note that all these three basis of stratification complement one another
wealth allows people to influence culture and thereby gain status and gain power
suggests people with all three are the most powerful
Political authority:
Ideal basis of legitimate domination
Weber recognized that rules really have to use overt power, or even threaten to use it
Legitimacy
found that people followed orders when they believed rulers have the legitimate right to rule
Types of Authority
Charismatic
Traditional
Legal-rational
Charismatic Authority
charisma unique powers of individual are the basis for their domination of others
Traditional Authority
Tradition is used to justify the rule of some over others
Legal-rational authority
rules justify domination
weber saw this as the most rational form of authoruty
Bureaucracy (the most famous ideal type of weber)
organization in which rules are the basis of action, are rationally organized to coordinate all actors
Components of Bureaucracy (6)
positions with formal duties based on rules
meritocracy
hierarchical chain of demand
salary based comensation
record keeping
it includes coordinating people and getting them to pursue ORGANIZATIONAL interests instead of PERSONAL
The darker side of bureaucracy
dehumanization: makes us simply follow the rules, don’t think for ourselves, are controlled by the bureaucratic machine
Iron cage: bureaucracies control everything, we are unable act freely, always constrained by bureaucratic red tape
