Patriarchy Flashcards
Patriarchy
norms seeing men as rightful rules and can affect all social institutions
Sexism
related concept dealing with discrimination
Biological view of patriarchy
claims that patriarchy is in our genes
testosterone and larger bodies
Sociological view of patriarchy
It is a social construct, not biological
social structures empower men more than women
Weaknesses of sociological explanations
Biggest problem:
has more difficulty explaining why patriarchy is normal
2 sociological and biological arguments
1) combine sociological and biological arguments:
Patriarchy is the norm historically but there is great variation due to social relations
2) deny the universality of patriarchy, note that it only recently became a theorem
Proliferation
Three major arguments, two are biological, one social
1) Intensive agriculture
2) War argument
3) Colonialism arguments
Intensive agriculture
use of plow made men economically dominant
greater physical strength
gave them control over resources
War argument
rise of plundering/conquest empires after sealed agriculture gave men power because of strength and female pregnancy/breastfeeding
Colonialism argument
suggests colonial powers imposed patriarchal norms and institutions… no biology involved
