Poggi: Weber and the Sources of Power Flashcards
Gianfranco Poggi
Expands on Weber’s writings on stratification to come with a Weberian social basis of power
Poggi main points
states that power enforces stratification
societies do not become stratified naturally
the powerful enforce stratified social systems
each ideal type of stratification is based on different types of power
Class/Wealth
power and stratification are based on the material resources one controls
(money, land, power)
exchange resources to get what you want from others
basis of power is material wealth
Staus/Custom
culture or ideology defines what is the most important/proper
(age, piety, facial tattoos)
the people who conform most to cultural norms get respect and privileges
Party/Command
rulership is the basis of this type of power
involves the threat of execution of severe punishments to get what you want
e.g. the state uses rulerships to get people to pay taxes
